Tom Mowers is a Research Chemist. His many years spent in Research and Development lead him to the discovery that many research breakthroughs made by large companies are never put to use, for the simple reason that they do not fit into the company's product field. Tom believes the trouble with MLM is that most companies are selling basically the same products, with similar marketing plans. "The last thing the world needs is another cosmetic company", he says. Mower started Neways because the products he had to offer were 'dynamically superior' to anything else on the market. "If you take our hair care products home and use them," he says, "you will know our products are enormously superior. You can see it in one trial." Mower ran his own industrial chemical manufacturing business for a decade, selling to food processing plants, hospitals, hotels, and so on. "I was always looking for ways to make my products superior", he says. "A lot of companies try to compete in the market place with similar products. They try to get the edge with better advertising and better salesmanship." "I always wanted my sales people to be as good as they could be, but I also wanted to give them a product that was enormously superior." "One day, in 1974, I read an article in a scientific journal about some research that had been done in Helsinki, Finland. The researchers had been testing a compound to arrest skin cancer on the heads of bald men. A surprising side effect of this compound was that these men started sprouting hair. The study had gone on for three years, and the scientists claimed to have discovered what it was that caused the hair loss in the first place." "The study indicated that male pattern baldness is a genetic trait. The genetically inherited part is that you produce too much of the male hormone, testosterone. In excessive amounts, the hormone complexes and forms a compound called DHT, which gets into the hair follicle and affects the oil glands and the cells that produce the hair. It shuts them off, so the hair detaches. The follicle's oil glands stop producing oil and instead produce a thick grease that plugs the follicles. When the follicle is blocked, the hair shaft cannot grow." "This one particular compound, developed aqainst skin cancer was dissolving the DHT. With massage to improve the circulation, it was found the hair would start to emerge again." Up to that point it had been thought that in bald people the hair follicle died. But men who had lost their hair for 20-30 years found their hair re-emerging. Mower was already making high quality hair products, for use by people with sensitive skin, which he was selling to nursing homes, hospitals etc. He sent for the Helsinki report, put it in a file and sat on it for about five years. Then his twenty year old son started losing hair. Mower made up the formula and in a few weeks his son's hair was re-emerging. Word of this formulation spread and Mower was approached by several MLM companies that wanted him to supply them with his products. "I'd always been dubious about MLM" he says. "I thought MLM was the same as pyramid selling and a scam." "The Helsinki study" says Mower, "also shows many shampoos cause hair to fall out, especially in women, because they irritate the sebaceous gland and make it produce grease that plugs the hair follicles." "The hair care products I was already marketing didn't have that damaging chemistry in them." "Then I was asked to come up with a skin care line. I didn't know anything about cosmetics so I started looking at what was in the market place. I got hold of the suppliers and looked at their ingredients and I was absolutely shocked to find out many cosmetics really don't work. In terms of their ingredients and formulas there's very little difference from one brand to another." "I would say to the supplier. 'What is the active ingredient in this formula?' and they would say There is no active ingredient; 'So how does it work?' I'd ask. 'Well, it films the skin and traps the moisture in"' "When I started investigating, I found it wasn't good for the skin to trap moisture in." "The common ingredient used in many shampoos and in many bath and shower gels and bubble baths is a powerful detergent which is even used industrially in floor cleaners and engine degreasers and is one to which many users demonstrate a greater or lesser sensitivity. The reason this powerful detergent is in the formula is because a small amount produces a lot of foam, making the product look thick and rich." "The major ingredient in most moisturisers is Propylene Glycol which, although sometimes used as a food additive, is also used in industrial anti-freeze and is even found in brake fluid! I am not using this example to denigrate moisturisers but to demonstrate that there is often little difference between what is used in cosmetics and what is used in industry except that cosmetic companies usually check the biological quality of raw ingredients to make sure that no bacteria are present. These ingredients effectively "all come from the same tank" "I thought, 'Doesn't anyone know that some of the cosmetics they are using may be bad for them?'." "The reason the quality of some cosmetics is often so poor," says Mower, "is that so much money is put into advertising and packaging. Almost nothing goes into ingredients." He says, "With some formulations the cap on the bottle costs more than the ingredients!" "When people buy a bottle of cosmetics, they are often buying a bottle of hype. They are wasting their money and, at the same time, may only be making their skin age faster. They would be better off if they didn't use anything on their skin at all!" Mower isn't impressed by the claims of many cosmetic manufacturers who use 'natural' ingredients. "Poison Ivy is natural", he says, "so 'natural' doesn't necessarily mean good or safe." "The first thing I look for is safety, the second is effectiveness and the third is economic feasibility." Mower also says, "Claims that cosmetics are not tested on animals are misleading." "By law in the USA, all ingredients in their raw state have to have been tested on animals at some stage. The cosmetic manufacturer doesn't have to test the ingredients on animals but the materials used will often already have been tested on animals. I don't test anything on animals and never have!" Mower says he was drawn into MLM, despite his reservations, because it was the only effective way to market his dynamic products. "I could not afford to advertise them widely", he said. "If you simply put them on the shelves with other products, people may never try them. However, when people use the products and see the results, they are going to want to share their excitement. MLM is the most effective method of communicating the benefits of these products to the consumer'.' "The second-largest cosmetic company in the United States has a policy whereby they don't buy an ingredient that costs over $5 a pound." "Our products cost a lot to make, but we spend very little on marketing or advertising. There is nothing wrong with advertising, but with most cosmetics they are selling hype, in reality they are selling a bottle of nothing. My message is: Save your money, save your face. Most people are better off putting their money in the bank and using nothing on their faces but soap and water. They will stay younger and healthier." "One of the greatest things about MLM", says Mower, "is it gives people the chance to become part of the economy. It is the democratising of the market place. It gives the average person the chance to obtain financial freedom they can't achieve working in a normal job. In most jobs you trade your time for dollars. You don't have a future, you are working for someone else's dream. In MLM you start trading time for time, because rather than simple addition and subtraction you get into multiplication." "In MLM, when people use the products and see the results, they can build a momentum that carries on. We are helping people achieve financial success and independence. They are working with Neways because they believe in the products, and they are working towards their own dreams." "Numerous MLM companies commence business but most fail within the first couple of years. We have a large plant in Utah, USA where we formulate, manufacture, package and distribute Neways products, a production facility in Auckland, New Zealand and a distribution centre in Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire with a staff of nearly 30. We are debt free. We are at a stage few MLM companies ever get to. In the UK we are putting on 100s of new Distributors every month, our top Bonus Cheques are already over £20.000 per month and many Distributors are benefiting from the Car Programme." "The biggest problem with most MLM companies," says Mower, "is the emphasis is on recruitment, to the detriment of product sales. As soon as you join, they say, 'make a list of 200 people you know and go out and try to recruit them" How do you get a house-wife to go out and tell a banker she is going to make him rich? This get-rich-quick mentality does not work. It comes from the old pyramid schemes of the '60s and '70s. Too many MLM companies have everybody out there recruiting and sponsoring like crazy. The problem is they are only paid commission on product sales, not on recruiting. When Distributors concentrate on recruiting, they have a lot of people dropping out, feeling frustrated and unhappy because they have not earned any money." "I believe our Distributors should start by being their own best customers. If our products have the dynamic superiority we claim then the person will become a believer in the product, and that is the best sort of salesperson in the world. Ask people what attracted them to our Company and most will say, 'the products' It is usually after they are sold on the products that they find out about the Marketing Plan." "The next step is for the Distributor to establish a customer base. Retail sales are the foundation on which a successful MLM company should be built. Only when you meet someone whom you feel will help you build your business should you sponsor them. You then have a responsibility to teach them how to be their own best customer, retail the products, and sponsor good Distributors." "If you follow that course you will build a solid future in Neways " "Now we have a number of Distributors earning in excess of £20,000 per month. You will succeed because Neways is soundly managed and debt free, the unique products are competitively priced and effective and the Marketing Plan is the most generous in the industry." If you are interested, we recommend you try thproducts for yourself. Tom claims that all his range is superior to its competitors, so there should be a noticeable difference. In any business the success of the enterprise rests on the products. If it isn't unique or >demonstrably better that business is most likely to fail. This should be elementary, but when the matter becomes complicated - as in MLM and franchising, for instance - this cardinal rule is often forgotten.
